How it works
grade % = exam × exam weight% + coursework × (100 − exam weight)%coursework weight is whatever the exam does not take, so the two shares add to 100%
- exam
- your score on the exam
- exam weight
- the share of the grade the exam is worth
- coursework
- your combined coursework score, weighted with the rest
This splits the grade into two parts, an exam and everything else. If your class weights homework, quizzes and a project separately, add each as its own weighted slice, keeping the weights totalling 100%.
Frequently asked questions
How is a semester grade calculated?
Multiply each part by its weight as a decimal, then add them. An 82% exam at 40% plus 90% coursework at 60% is 86.8%.
What if the exam is worth 40%?
Then coursework is worth the other 60%, since the two weights always add up to 100%.
What grade is an 86.8%?
86.8% is a B on the standard US scale, which runs from 80 to 89 for a B.
Can I add more than two categories?
This tool uses two, the exam and coursework. For more, add each category as its own weighted piece and keep the weights summing to 100%.
